Overview

Slender blue-green foliage forms a dense clump, from which the wispy flowerspikes are jettisoned in late summer - around the same time as the foliage takes on a purplish red hue. The foliage colour of this striking grass then continues to intensify in autumn, becoming redder and redder before dying back for in winter. The clearly upright silhouette of Schizachyrium 'Standing Ovation' will help add structure to the border, while the colour of the fiery foliage will draw the eye and create a handsome focal point.

Care guide

It is vital to keep the tray three-quarters full of water at all times or the plant will be unlikely to survive. The plant takes up water via capillary action, with the porous rock soaking up moisture which is then absorbed by the plant's roots. Avoid placing the plant in direct sunlight as this will quickly deplete the store of water, and ideally use only filtered or rain water to prevent limescale turning the rock white. Mist the leaves regularly with water to improve the humidity around the plant, and feed with a diluted liquid fertiliser (only one quarter the recommended strength), when watering from late spring to early autumn. Maintain temperatures above 15°C.

Pots and Packaging
Larger pots (2L and above) are wrapped in waxed paper and then attached to a cardboard base so they stay stable in the box. The waxed paper prevents the compost from spilling out and gives the base some added protection from damp compost. For large numbers of plants, pallets may be used for shipping.

Preparation
The nursery will ensure the plant is moist while it's waiting to be picked up. Our quality control team waters the plant before packing them where necessary to make sure that the plant is suitably watered for transport. Plants with long delicate stems are secured with canes to prevent damage.
