Overview

Dainty flowers appear on short, upright stems above clumps of foliage from late winter to mid-spring. A delightful perennial, which will come back year after year, these are superb plants that have oodles of character and charm.

Specifications

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil or general-purpose potting compost for containers
  • Rate of growth: average to fast
  • Flowering period: milder spells from October to March
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Care guide

Seedlings should be potted up and grown on in a frost-free environment before gradually hardening off and planting out in compost or well-drained, humus-rich soil that is not frozen or prone to waterlogging. Protect young plants from slug damage using environmentally friendly slug pellets or beer traps. Pinching out the growing tips will encourage them to become bushier, and feeding with a high-potash fertiliser at regular intervals throughout the summer will promote even more flowers to form.
