Overview

Radiating the warmth of a summer sunset, this spectacular dinner plate dahlia produces show-stopping blooms that command attention from mid-summer until the first frosts.Dahlia 'Dazzling Sun' creates a dramatic display with its massive 20cm(8in) wide flowers, each featuring elongated yellow petals precisely out lined in red and anchored by rich red bases, creating an extraordinary sunburst effect that seems to glow in the border. Rising above mid-green foliage on sturdy stems, this tuberous perennial offers both garden impact and cutting potential, making it equally valuable for borders and the vase. Whether paired with deep red companions for dramatic contrast, softened with creamy pastels, or set against luxuriant foliage for a tropical effect, these long-lasting blooms bring sophisticated warmth to sunny garden spaces.

Care guide

Dahlia tubers can be planted outside after frost, or started off in pots under glass in late winter to early spring. Plant them horizontally approximately12cm deep, making sure the 'eyes' are uppermost. Allow enough room between each tuber so the plants can grow and spread to their full size with out being overcrowded. While in growth, provide a high-nitrogen liquid feed eachweek in June, then a high-potash fertiliser each week from July to September. Inmild areas, leave them insitu over winter, but protect the crown with a generous layer of dry mulch. In colder areas, carefully lift and clean the tubers once the first frosts have blackened the foliage and allow them to dry naturally indoors. Then place the dry tubers in a shallow tray, just covered with slightly moist potting compost, sand or vermiculite and store in a frost-free place until planting out again.
