Overview

This eye-catching perennial stands out with its vibrant, fiery-red, semi-double and lightly scented blooms that emerge over the summer and into early autumn, adding long-lasting colour to borders or containers.

Geum Firestarter has a clump-forming habit, producing an abundance of ruffled flowers on upright, wiry stems that attract pollinators and create a lively display. With rich, deep green foliage providing ground cover for much of the year, this hardy geum brings both structure and vivid colour to the garden.

Tolerant of full sun or partial shade, it thrives in moist, well-drained soiland works well alongside other early summer perennials, offering continuous impact for months.

Care guide

Plant Geum 30-45cm (12-18in) apart in a sunny to partially shaded position, improving the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter to ensure good drainage and moisture retention, especially if the soil is heavy or sandy. Keep the plant well-watered, particularly during its first growing season and in dry periods, as Geum prefers consistently moist but not waterlogged soil. Deadheading spent blooms encourages continued flowering and prevents self-seeding. Cut back untidy foliage in autumn. Lift and divide clumps every couple of years in early autumn and replant with the crown just above the surface of the soil. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in)mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the crown of the plant in spring.
