Overview

Perfect for adding colour to shady gardens, this lenten rose features large, double yellow blooms that measure 5-6cm (2in) across. Each flower is edged with a maroon picotee and lightly veined in a contrasting shade, creating a striking, long-lasting visual display that blooms during the Christian season of Lent.

Helleborus × hybridus 'First Dance' thrives in moist, woodland areas, naturally spreading through its extensive root system. It’s a versatile choice for areas of dappled shade beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, adding year-round interest.

The plant’s sturdy stems hold the nodding flowers above a backdrop of glossy, dark green, evergreen foliage. Additionally, it's deer-resistant, making it a great option for garden spaces where browsing animals are a concern.

Care guide

Add lots of well-rotted leaf mould or organic matter to the planting hole. Cut the old leaves back down to the ground in January or February as this will show off the new emerging flowers to best effect. It will also help to get rid of foliar diseases such as Hellebore leaf spot.

Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plant in autumn and provide a top-dressing of general fertiliser each spring. Cut off the seed heads to prevent inferior seedlings colonising.
