Overview

With its compact, clump-forming habit, this perennial makes a striking addition to cottage themed and mixed borders. Geranium oxonianum 'Dusky Rose' features deeply lobed, maroon to purple-brown leaves that create a rich backdrop for soft, baby-pink flowers.

Blooming from late spring to early autumn, the delicate flowers appear in abundance, adding a touch of colour to the garden for months. This hardy geranium thrives in various soil types, including clay, and is particularly valued for its ability to tolerate a range of conditions. The dark foliage enhances the pink blooms, creating a pleasing contrast.

Ideal for borders on the dry side or ground cover, it is a bee-friendly plant, attracting pollinators throughout its flowering period. Easy to maintain, it will continue to form a neat, low mound of foliage year after year.

Care guide

This tough, low-maintenance perennial thrives in a range of garden conditions, including dry shade and poor soils, once established.

When planting, choose a site with well-drained soil in partial shade to full sun, and incorporate organic matter to improve soil structure.

Water regularly until established, but once settled, this geranium becomes more drought-tolerant and requires lower maintenance.

Avoid hoeing around the plant, as its surface-growing rhizomes can be easily damaged—weed by hand instead. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming and lightly trim back foliage after flowering to keep plants looking tidy.

In autumn or early spring, divide congested clumps to rejuvenate growth and spread the plant to other areas of the garden. A light mulch of compost or leaf mould in spring will support healthy foliage and flowering.
