Compact and reliable, this small shrubby salvia produces a long succession of soft pink blooms, each flared with a deeper blush that gives a gentle two-tone effect. The darker calyces provide extra contrast, helping the flowers stand out from the neat mound of aromatic foliage beneath. Its fruity-scented leaves add another layer of interest, making it a pleasure to brush past on a warm day.
Salvia ‘Angel Wings’ is ideal for the front of sunny borders or grown in containers, where its compact habit keeps it tidy and easy to manage. Bees and pollinators flock to its flowers, and with regular deadheading it continues to bloom well into autumn.
Hardier than many 'shrubby' salvias, it may overwinter in milder parts of the UK, but in colder regions it benefits from fleece or a mulch for protection. Low maintenance and floriferous, it is a versatile choice for gardens where colour, fragrance, and wildlife appeal are all priorities.
When planting, incorporate compost to improve drainage and fertility, spacing plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart and watering thoroughly.
To keep the plant blooming throughout the season, promptly remove flower spikes as soon as they begin to fade - this deadheading encourages the plant to produce more flowers rather than putting energy into seed production.
In early spring, apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and provide essential nutrients as it breaks down. Ensure the mulch is spread evenly, but keep it away from the stems to prevent rot.
Regular watering, particularly in dry spells, will help maintain healthy growth, but be careful not to waterlog the soil, as this salvia prefers well-drained conditions.
