Overview

This bold bloomer is made for sunny spots, bringing rich colour and a relaxed, flowing habit to pots, baskets, and borders. Velvety flower heads in deep rose to magenta sit above softly serrated green foliage, forming a spreading, mounding plant that quickly fills its space and then gently trails for a natural, cascading look. Flowering is generous and long-lasting from summer into autumn, with large clusters that not only look good up close but also catch the eye from a distance.

Verbena ‘Showboat Magenta’ thrives in full sun and free-draining compost, where it keeps performing even in warm conditions, making it a reliable choice for containers and bedding displays. It’s easy to grow, low fuss, and a magnet for butterflies and other pollinators, rewarding a little regular watering and feeding with weeks of colour.

Please note that while this tender perennial can overwinter, it is commonly grown as a bold bedding annual.

Care guide

Pot up seedlings and cuttings and grow them on under glass until the risk of frost has passed. Once conditions are warmer, they can be planted directly into well-prepared beds, or used to fill patio pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets for long-lasting seasonal colour. Larger 9cm bedding plants don’t usually need potting on but will benefit from initial frost protection in spring.

To keep bedding plants looking their best, and where applicable, pinch out the tips to promote bushier growth and water regularly, especially in containers where compost dries out quickly. Feed with a high-potash fertiliser every couple of weeks to encourage continuous flowering. Deadhead faded blooms, as required, to extend the display and keep plants tidy, ensuring vibrant summer flowers from planting time right through to the first frosts.
