In spring and summer, its rounded, non-thorny foliage emerges in a striking red hue, before maturing into a lush, dark green. But the real showstopper arrives in late summer, as upright spires of bold, golden flowers burst forth, illuminating the garden like celestial candles. These striking blooms persist well into autumn, great for pollinating insects, before eventually giving way to a bounty of blue-black berries.

Easy to grow and naturally branching, this resilient shrub thrives in well-draining soil, making it an ideal choice for both garden beds and container plantings that require an architectural silhouette and captivating colour palette.

Care guide

This Mahonia is adaptable to a range of light conditions, though colour is best produced in light shade to full sun. Ensure the soil is well-draining, as this plant thrives in humus-rich, slightly acidic soils.

When planting, dig a hole slightly deeper than the root ball and incorporate plenty of organic matter to enrich the soil. Space plants 3-4 feet apart to allow for the natural, bushy growth habit. Be sure to water regularly during the first year to establish a deep, robust root system.

Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring while it is getting established.
