Nicotiana × sanderae ‘Perfume Deep Purple’ is a compact, branching plant reaching around 45cm (16in), with fresh green foliage and clusters of deep purple, trumpet-shaped flowers held on upright stems. The blooms open freely through summer, bringing bold colour by day, then releasing a soft, jasmine-like fragrance as dusk falls.

Perfect for containers, window boxes or the front of borders, it’s easy to grow and keeps flowering with minimal effort. Its manageable size and long season make it a reliable filler, while the rich tones add depth to planting schemes.

Care guide

Protect Nicotiana from frost by planting out only after the risk has passed, or by using cloches or horticultural fleece in cooler weather. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with fertile, well-drained soil. Keep the soil or compost moist by watering regularly during dry spells, ensuring the roots don’t dry out.

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every fourteen days throughout the growing season to encourage continuous flowering. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong the display.
