Overview

The variation in colour and flower forms of this beautiful dahlia collection will add vibrancy as well as structural interest to borders from midsummer. These rich and contrasting dahlias will put on quite a show if planted together, but they could also be mixed with rich purples and silvers.

Care guide

Dahlia tubers can be planted outside after frost, or started off in pots under glass in late winter to early spring. Plant them horizontally approximately 12cm deep, making sure the ‘eyes’ are uppermost. Allow enough room between each tuber so the plants can grow and spread to their full size without being over-crowded. While in growth, provide a high-nitrogen liquid feed each week in June, then a high-potash fertiliser each week from July to September. Stake with canes or brushwood if it becomes necessary. In mild areas, leave them in situ over winter, but protect the crown with a generous layer of dry mulch. In colder areas, carefully lift and clean the tubers once the first frosts have blackened the foliage and allow them to dry naturally indoors. Then place the dry tubers in a shallow tray, just covered with slightly moist potting compost, sand or vermiculite and store in a frost-free place until planting out again.

Features

In each collection you will receive one tuber of each of the following cultivars:

  • Dahlia 'Crème de Cassis': Good sized flowerheads, with petals that are a soft violet-pink on the upper surface and a rich plum underneath. This creates a very pretty effect and makes them easy to mix - they look great with rich plums. Grows to 1.1m.
  • Dahlia 'Orfeo': Impressively large (up to 15cm) and almost iridescent, the cactus-type flowers of this fab dahlia will really shine out in the border. Their long stalks make them perfect for the vase too, so make sure you plant some extras. Grows to 1.1m.
  • Dahlia'French Cancan': A loose and flouncy dahlia with two-tone orange flowers, 'French Cancan' is a gorgeous bloomer with light tangerine, slightly twisted petals and a deeper, warmer underside of blood-red orange. Fabulous for cutting, this fanciful and playful tuberous perennial is sure to bring a smile to your face, whether in bloom in the garden or in a vase. Grows to 1.2m.
