A majestic and impressive perennial with handsome foliage, this angelica also produces rounded umbels up to 25cm across, of small green flowers in early summer. Ideally suited to a reliably moist soil in partial to full shade, it has a striking achitectural presence and looks wonderful at the back of the border. Often short-lived, it will usually die back after flowering, but will self-seed freely if the conditions are favourable. Growing instructions: Sow direct from May to June in 2.5cm (1") deep drills. Germination can take 2-3 weeks. Thin seedlings to 15cm(6") apart. Transplant when young as older plants dislike being moved. Plant 60-90cm (2-3ft) apart. Alternatively, sow seeds in autumn or late spring in modules. Sow onto the surface of the soil or compost as the seeds need light to germinate. Sow: May to June Flowering: June to July
