How do you take care of a Magnolia tree?

Magnolia trees are a low maintenance species that don’t need an awful lot of care. They are also resilient to many common diseases and pests, and can live for more than 100 years if cared for properly. Place them in the right space to make the most of them – larger magnolias can branch out over 10 feet, so they need plenty of space to grow.

Mature magnolias will last hot summers and drought, however growing trees need to be watered regularly before they are established. Like all plants, magnolias need a little bit of pruning to remove dead branches to stop them being an energy drain and to keep them looking in their best condition. You should prune your magnolia after blooming season in late spring or early summer – if you prune at the wrong time the bloom will be less impressive.

If it is growing well, you don't need to fertilise. However you can apply fertiliser if it is browning or isn't growing as well as it should be.

How to plant a magnolia tree?

Magnolia trees will do well in rich and moist soil with good drainage. Evergreen species prefer plenty of direct sunlight whereas deciduous species like to be in a bit of shade.

  1. Dig a hole that is a bit bigger than the size of the plant's container.
  2. Untangle the rootball and plant in the hole.
  3. Add compost and firm in the plant with your hands and water it well.
  4. Add mulch like bark or more compost on top to retain water.

As well as its stunning creamy white blooms and sweet scent, the magnolia is hailed in Chinese culture. The magnolia lives for many years which is how they came to symbolise endurance and perseverance, and was used for healing in traditional Chinese medicine. Because of its association with everlasting connections, magnolia flowers have become a popular choice in many wedding bouquets.

Because magnolia trees are slow and can take up to 20 years to reach their full size, many people opt to buy mature trees. These trees are a long-term investment, so cut down your waiting time if you’re looking to add an eye-catching addition in less time.
