How do you take care of tomato plants?

Tomatoes are an extremely rewarding plant, and when cared for properly, produce masses of tasty tomatoes that are so much better than shop-bought varieties. Tomato plants do well in rich and fertile soil. You should plant them in a sunny spot that also has shelter later in the day, as too much direct sunlight can be damaging – especially intense sun in hot weather. This can discolour the plant and cause it to wither so aim for around six hours of direct sunlight a day.

You should slowly water tomato plants, making sure the soil is dry and the roots have absorbed all the water before adding more. Tomato plants need less water when they are younger, and then when they are older, watering them twice a day is recommended.

Can you keep a tomato plant all year?

Yes, you can. When it becomes colder, you can bring your tomatoes indoors to keep them alive and protect them against the elements. However, it is worth noting that indoor tomato plants produce smaller tomatoes and harvests when they are indoors, and eventually stop growing and producing fruit when you bring them in over winter.

How long does it take tomatoes to grow?

It can take anywhere from 60 to 100 days to grow tomatoes ready for harvest. However, this can depend on the environmental conditions the plant is grown in as well as your expertise.

Do coffee grounds help tomatoes grow?

Yes, they do. Coffee grounds are nitrogen-rich and contain potassium, potassium, magnesium, copper, and other trace minerals which are nutritious and essential for tomato plant growth.
