Overview

An early maturing tomato famed for its heavy crops of excellent quality fruit. 'Shirley' also shows excellent disease resistance and is best grown in grow bags as a greenhouse cordon or cane-supported in large pots due to its upright, open habit. Produces heavy trusses of medium-sized red tomatoes from June to September. Growing Instructions: Sow in a frost-free greenhouse or windowsill, potting on seedlings individually as they grow. Once all danger of frost has passed, plant into greenhouse borders or into growbags, or harden plants off and plant outside in rich soil in a sunny spot. Tie in to supports and pinch out side shoots: keep well-watered and feed weekly once flowers form. Keep water levels in the soil consistent to prevent blossom end rot and split fruit. Increase water in hot spells and reduce in cool weather to keep the soil constantly damp. Sow: January to March Harvest: June to September

  • Hardiness: half-hardy annual A popular plum tomato with large crops of dense, meaty-fleshed fruits with few seeds and produced over a long period from early in the season. 'San Marzano 2' is the latest variety of this classic Italian tomato which is used mainly for cooking and is perfect for making sauces and passata.
  • Growing instructions: From February to May, sow 1cm deep in trays or two seeds per pot selecting the strongest seedling on germination. This takes one to two weeks and is best done at 64°F (18°C), ideally in a heated propagator, or covered with a clear plastic bag and placed on a warm windowsill. Use multi-purpose compost, to cover seeds. Plant out in a greenhouse from March or outside once the risk of frost has passed. Remove all side shoots as they appear. Pinch the growing tip when the plant has formed seven trusses under cover or four trusses outdoors.
