For the best possible display of spring bulbs in pots, the technique of planting pots in layers extends the period of interest and looks great. This combination of 37 bulbs can produce a display of flowers from early March to mid- to late May. On the patio or on either side of a front door they will give a scented welcome to your home in spring.

Care guide

Keep pots well watered (particularly during dry weather) and feed at regular intervals with a high-potash liquid fertiliser such as Tomorite.

Planting requirements

  • Add some bulb fibre to the bottom of your pot, then starting with the tuilp bulbs, sit these (pointy side uppermost) on top of the compost. The aim is to plant these deeply, so they should sit approximately 15 to 20cm below the rim of the pot. Cover them with with a little more bulb fibre, then start placing the hyacinths, aiming for a finished planting depth of approximately 12cm. Fill in with bulb fibre as before, then add the anemones, which should be sitting between 3 to 5cm deep.
  • If you have purchased the multibuy (and received the free muscari bulbs), then these should be planted approximately 10cm deep - so creating another layer that sits on top of the tulips and hyacinths, but below the anemones.

  • 25 x Anemone blanda blue-flowered: This is a wonderful plant that produces cheerful, daisy-like flowers in shades of blue and purple, giving a floral display from early March to April. Grows to 25cm.
  • 5 x Hyacinthus orientalis 'Delft Blue': A recipient of the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society with its porcelain blue, star-shaped flowers that crowd the upright flower spike in spring, filling the surrounding air with their sweet perfume. I recommend planting it near a pathway or entrance, so the scent can be best appreciated. Flowers April to May. Grows to 25cm.
  • 7 x Tulipa 'Pretty Love': Sporting a captivating pink hue adorned with a darker flush, 'Pretty Love' showcases gracefully reflexing pointed petals from deeply saturated pink, fluted-shaped flowers, ideal for cutting. The leaves of this variety offer their own visual delight, boasting a lush grass-green hue with delicate lighter green stripes, providing a stunning contrast to the vibrant blooms. Grows to 50cm.
  • If you buy 2 collections, you will also receive -50 x Muscari armeniacum: Another RHS AGM award winner with charming, cone-shaped spikes of tiny, mid-blue flowers that apper in early March to April above the grass-like, mid-green leaves. Grape hyacinths look gorgeous peeping out of a large container planted with anemones. Grows to 15cm.
