Overview

Compact and free-flowering, this nasturtium produces a long display of soft apricot blooms that stand clear above the foliage. The rounded green leaves form a neat, bushy mound making it ideal for edging beds, filling gaps, or spilling from containers and baskets. Flowering starts in early summer and continues well into autumn, providing months of reliable colour.

Tropaeolum majus ‘Tip Top Apricot’ thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, and its trumpet-shaped flowers are attractive to bees. Easy to grow from seed and low maintenance once established, it is a versatile annual that brings both ornamental value and a touch of edible interest, as the leaves and flowers can be used in salads. Care guide

Avoid overwatering or over-feeding (once per fortnight with a diluted liquid feed is ample) to avoid producing leaves at the expense of flowers. Requires minimal maintenance though a check for caterpillars and blackfly will help reduce incidence of defoliation. Dead-heading regularly will also encourage an even better display.

Planting requirements

  • Soak the seeds overnight and then sow an early crop under glass in good seed compost, covering lightly. Maintain the temperature between 13-16°C (55-61°F) and water when necessary. When large enough to handle, pot on or acclimatise slowly and plant outside after all risk of frost has passed. Alternatively sow directly outside in mid to late spring.
