Overview

Attractive drooping clusters of blue, purple, pink or cream, bell-shaped flowers in early summer above mounds of mid-green leaves. Comfrey is excellent groundcover for a moist, partially shady border or woodland edge. Although a good companion for ferns and shade-loving woodland plants it's best sited away from smaller, less vigorous species. The leaves can be steeped in water to make 'comfrey tea', which produces an excellent organic plant food. Growing instructions: From March, direct sow thinly 10mm deep in rows 30cm apart. When large enough to handle thin to 60cm spacing. Comfrey foliage can be harvested (while wearing gloves) 3 or 4 times throughout the summer. Sow: March to June Flowering: June to August

Care guide

Pinch back stems before mid-summer to promote bushiness. Dead head to avoid unwanted seedlings or cut back in late autumn to the ground and apply a generous mulch of well-rotted garden compost or horse manure around the base of the plant.

  • Hardiness: fully hardy A compact variety with lilac-blue daisy-like flowers with yellow centres from late summer and lance-shaped, aromatic mid-green leaves. This is a pretty cousin of Aster (Michaelmas Daisy) that will self-seed where happy and brighten up a mixed or herbaceous border after other perennials have done their bit. Deer and rabbit resistant, drought and salt tolerant, the abundant and long-flowering blooms of 'October Skies' are a clarion call for butterflies, bees and other pollinating insects.
