Overview

To find out more about how to plant a hedge, click here Needle-like, dark green leaves on horizontal branches and fleshy, cup-shaped, bright-red autumn fruits on female plants. The dark green foliage of this slow-growing, evergreen conifer provides an excellent background for shrub and herbaceous borders. Broadly conical in shape, it's tolerant to dry shade, chalky and acid soils, and urban pollution. Yew also makes a fabulous, formal hedge.

Care guide

When planting, incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and firm gently around the rootball before watering well. Water during dry spells in the first year, until established. If growing in containers, additional watering will be necessary. Prune or clip to shape in summer. Mature plants can tolerate hard pruning in spring, cutting back to the old wood. Apply a generous layer of mulch around the base of the plant (avoiding the immediate crown) in late winter.

How your order will arrive

Pots and Packaging
Larger pots (2L and above) are wrapped in waxed paper and then attached to a cardboard base so they stay stable in the box. The waxed paper prevents the compost from spilling out and gives the base some added protection from damp compost. For large numbers of plants, pallets may be used for shipping.

Preparation
The nursery will ensure the plant is moist while it's waiting to be picked up. Our quality control team waters the plant before packing them where necessary to make sure that the plant is suitably watered for transport. Plants with long delicate stems are secured with canes to prevent damage.
