Additional Information

  • Choose your favourite bamboo for your garden

At Primrose, we have a great range of bamboo plants with colours for every garden. Choose from traditional green or golden bamboo, or why not choose the stylish black bamboo?

We also offer a variety of styles, including hedging and clumping styles.

  • How do I plant bamboo?

Easy to grow and maintain, bamboo is suitable for British climates. When planting bamboo, dig a hole that is twice as wide and deep as the root. For the root, surround it with compost and good-quality soil. You can also add fertiliser to give it the boost of energy that it needs. This plant can grow well in a variety of soils, as long as it isn’t too boggy and has good drainage.

We recommend planting bamboo in early spring or late fall so that the rootstalk can store food reserves to feed the growth of new canes over summer. Although you can plant bamboo in any mild weather, including the winter, if the soil is too dry or your garden is too exposed it might not grow well. Space mature bamboo plants 1 metre apart for dense screening, however, they won't suffer if they are placed closer together.

  • How do I look after my bamboo plant?

Bamboos are thirsty plants and require regular feeding. It is important to prune your plant at the base in late summer or fall after the shooting season is finished. This can help to enhance the beauty of the plant and prevent it from growing out of control.

Because bamboo has shallow roots, you can carry out regular root inspections. This is important so that you prevent them from spreading across your garden – simply prune them with a garden spade.

  • How do I plant bamboo in a pot?

If you opt to grow your bamboo in a planter or raised bed, this can allow you to reorganise your garden displays. For running bamboo varieties, their roots are rather strong and can break through plant pots. You should buy a metal or strong wooden one with good drainage to keep it under control.

    1. When you've got a plant pot, lay several inches of gravel at the base and to help weigh it down so it doesn't blow over in the wind.
    2. Fill the planter with compost and soil, and untangle the rootball to help encourage root growth when it is planted.
    3. Soak the roots in water for around 20-30 minutes.
    4. Bury the rootball in the soil and press down to remove air pockets.
    5. Add a layer of bark at the base to help retain water.
