What plants are best for jumbo planters?

Jumbo plant pots can accompany bigger plants and turn ordinary gardens into works of art. Adding height to your landscape, mixing jumbo planters with smaller ones can add drama to your outdoor space.

Great designs usually go by the rule "thrillers, fillers, spillers". Thriller plants are the big and bold ones which will be the main focus of your jumbo planter – usually tall, vertical ornamental plants in the middle. Fillers are mid-size, rounded plants that fill the space in the planter and complement the thriller. Spiller plants are cascading ones that tumble over the side of your jumbo plant pot, adding some variation to the appearance.

What should I put at the bottom of a jumbo planter?

Jumbo plant pots take large amounts of soil, which weighs it down and compresses it, having an effect on drainage and the root's ability to grow.

Before you fill your jumbo planter with soil, lay the bottom with light materials such as plastic and foam packing materials, recycled plastics, or crushed cans – just make sure they're clean of any food remnants and won't rot.

Avoid filler that will break down easily such as paper or cardboard. The filler should make up around one-third of your pot, then lay mesh or landscaping fabric over top to keep it in place, and add soil.

Finding the right size planter

If our jumbo range is too large for your garden, we also have a choice of sizes including small planters under 30cm, medium planters at 31-50cm, and large planters at 51cm-1m.

How much do sleeper planters weigh?

The weight of the sleeper planter depends on its age, the wood it’s composed of and whether it’s been treated. The older the tree, the heavier the wood. Hardwood is denser and hence heavier than softwood.

Pine sleepers weigh between 50 and 60kg, which is approaching the weight of an adult female. Hardwood sleepers are even heavier. Due to their cumbersome nature, we advise lifting them with someone to help you as the total planter weight will be many times that!

The key is to bend your knees, ensuring your back is straight. This will prevent injuries and ensure you are using your strongest muscles. Common injuries involve blunt trauma whereby poor coordination leads to crushed fingers and bruised feet.

What is a Jumbo Planter?

A jumbo planter is a very large planter, an extra large pot, bed or container that is specially designed for the biggest plants there are. Trees and topiary are the top choices for jumbo planters, but you can also add in massive colourful displays or trailing wonders. There's no explicit size guide, but our jumbo planter run from a metre tall upwards.
