Find large planters for every garden

An easy way to refresh your garden is by adding a selection of plants in stylish plant pots. At Primrose, we stock a wide range of planters that are perfect for adding impact to your outdoor space.

Which plants are best for large planters?

You have so much choice when it comes to deciding what to plant in your large garden planter. Many people choose to plant small trees and shrubs there, as the pots prevent them from growing too large.

For maximum effect, why not combine multiple plants in one planter? By choosing a mix of taller and smaller plants, along with trailing plants that can hang over the side of the pot, you can create a truly impactful look.

Make sure you select the correct plants based on where your large plant pot will be. If your planter will be outside all year round, it may be worth choosing hardy plants that are better suited to harsher conditions.

Likewise, if your plant needs a lot of direct sunlight, make sure to position your planter accordingly.

What should I fill the bottom of my planter with?

Before choosing what to fill your planter with, consider the needs of the plant you plan to pot. Some plants require ample room to grow and breathe. Proper drainage is essential for a healthy plant, so it's best to avoid using rocks, pebbles, and gravel at the bottom of your container.

A simple solution is to use recycled plastic containers, such as empty yoghurt pots or milk jugs, to fill the bottom of your planter. Metal cans, like crushed bean cans, also work well. Avoid using materials like minerals or organic matter that can decompose, as they may obstruct drainage and cause waterlogging.

After filling the bottom of your planter, it's time to add the final touch: high-quality soil. Avoid using garden soil, as it may contain unwanted weeds and other organisms.
