Despite not being recognised as a distinct group until the 1980s, ground cover roses now have a greatly expanded selection with growers struggling to match their popularity.
Ground covers are perfect for hiding manholes or suppressing weeds. Just make sure to clear them beforehand!
Divided into four groups, ground covers can grow to anything from 20cm to 2m high. At its smallest are the small creeping group, reaching a mere 30-45cm high and spreading to cover under 150cm. Next, come the large creeping roses that exceed 45cm and spread beyond 150cm.
Larger ground cover roses include the small and large arching groups. The former grow up to 95cm but remain under 150cm when spreading. The latter regularly exceed 100cm and spread to over 150cm.
