Viburnum Hedging

Viburnums Hedging

Viburnums make great informal hedging, on their own or mixed with other plants. Choose from V. tinus, V. lantana (Wayfaring tree) and V. opulus (Guelder rose).

They will grow on all but the most alkaline or very dry soils, tolerating wind, pollution and coastal locations and attract wildlife. After flowering, nip back the longest shoots, so you don’t lose the flowers and fruit.

V. tinus is one of the best evergreen winter interest shrubs, with pink buds turning to white sprays of flowers from late winter to early spring, followed by blue-black berries.

V. lantana makes a deciduous, bushy hedge, with fragrant white flowers, red fruits and lovely autumn foliage.

Finally, V. opulus is also deciduous and is grown for its large white flowers, red fruit and bright autumn leaf colour.
